Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Project (Mombasa-Nairobi SGR Project), located in Kenya, Africa, is expected to be completed in 60 months. Its owner is Kenya Railway Authority; and its main line is 472.25km long, running from Mombasa to Nairobi. The whole line is designed based on the Chinese standard, with the 1435mm standard gauge, the top speed of freight car 80km/h, the top speed of passenger car 120km/h, and 33 stations on the whole line.
The project is the first main line railway in East Africa which is constructed with the Chinese standard, Chinese technologies and Chinese equipment, and is managed and constructed by China. The Chinese elements of the project account for about 60%, so it will greatly drive the export of Chinese equipment, technology and materials and the export of a lot of Chinese technicians and plays an important role in promoting the construction of East African Three-dimensional transport network and African integration process. During the construction, the project will create 30,000 jobs for Kenya and promote Kenya’s GDP to increase by 1.5%. After the completion, it will reduce the logistics cost of Kenya by 40%.
Landmark: It is the first landmark project after China and Kenya established the comprehensive and cooperative partnership and also the first project of China-Africa Cooperation on Three Networks of Africa's Infrastructure and Industrialization.
Breakthrough: It is a leading project of Kenya port-railway transport and trade integration, and also a leading project of China-Kenya capacity cooperation.
Demonstration: In the implementation process, the project adapts to the social ecology, copes with the safety ecology, protects the natural ecology and shapes the media ecology.
